Digital Wanderer

I ran into an old online friend at university and we talked about paying for internet access. The thing is, people in our dorms usually cheat the provider. They connect illegally or through people who are already connected, arbitrarily take an IP address for themselves, and off they go. They do not pay a penny, and even boast about it and take pride in it. And my friend happens to know computer networks well, so he can easily pull something like that off and help others do it too. 
I try to explain. Look, you are cheating them. And when you become a provider yourself (which is quite possible), people will cheat you too. And there will be nothing you can do to stop it, because there is no technical way.  Even if you end up working in another field, people will still try to swindle you. Nothing good will come of this for you.
But our people are persistent and obstinate. Even if you are actually saving pennies, you have to try to screw every company your dick hands can reach. And yet the people around me are perfectly normal and honest, members of the intellectual elite, in fact. As far as I can tell, they never try to profit by deceiving friends or even mere acquaintances; on the contrary, they try to help. Is it really just because the provider is an impersonal, abstract company that people "do not feel sorry for?". When selling things through classified ads, people are also happy to palm off junk on others. I am certainly far from being a model of purity and righteousness, but whenever possible I try not to harm people if it is within my power.
This admittedly does not apply to downloading expensive music and films, or to huge companies/TNCs (transnational corporations). But that is an entirely different matter.
