I saw the newspaper “Subbota” with Godmanis on the cover in a shop and found it so funny that I actually bought it. It was the first time in several years that I’d read a newspaper.
It turns out newspapers can be a riot too! The front page describes how superheroes could help Latvia, along the lines of: “Spider-Man would fall off icy roofs in winter, so he’s no good.” In the middle there’s an article about why astrologers lie. The exposé is rather tame, but thanks for explaining the subject to the average reader.
Then there’s also a rather pessimistic analysis saying that the economy is screwed and things are only going to get worse. To my mega-amateur eye, it’s unconvincing, especially the part explaining what went wrong and what should have been done (devalue the lat). If the government had done just that, the advice would have been the exact opposite – anything to please the average reader, who always blames the government for every misfortune.
Overall – not bad, quite amusing. Still, I’m not going to start reading newspapers - they’re inconvenient, even if they’re easier on the eyes than a screen. Bring e-readers to the masses!
