Latvia - bike trip to Ilūkste

I should be writing about Turkey, but instead I'm going on bike rides. Guess I haven't ridden enough yet. We accidentally rode exactly 100 km and 6 meters today, with 20 of them on dirt roads. We were moving for 6.14, so our average speed was 16 km/h, and the whole ride took a whopping 9 hours. I realized that after Turkey I'm not afraid of anything – I can ride all day from morning till evening. By the way, we saw the oil storage facilities in Ilūkste. Also, an angry young lady at the freight train station angrily kicked us out, threatening to call the police.

By the way, we were only planning to ride to Ilūkste and back (maybe 50 kilometers max), but my restlessness led us all the way to Šēdere, and then past Svente.

There, a business-like kid of about 10 on an ancient bicycle thoroughly interrogated me about the purpose of our visit, and how much my bike cost. First, of course, he asked my name and introduced himself as Arthur. Then he complained that Šēdere was ugly, even though I told him the exact opposite. He also sensibly informed us that it usually gets dark around 9. We had plenty of time, even though Šēdere turned out to be completely out of the way, and too close to the border.

In the evening, a muscle in my leg started hurting near the knee – weird. I rode around Turkey for a week – everything was fine, but here in my homeland – it seized up right away.

There is no GPS track of the route, due to the fact that the iPhone has a crappy GPS receiver.

National treasure. The punk and anarchist took a picture  because there's resin flowing there, but it's hard to see here

An unusual water tower made of two tall concrete columns with four rounded tanks squeezed between them, set against trees and a blue sky. In the foreground, there is a dirt area next to an asphalt road with a turn direction sign. Water tower in Ilūkste

A bronze bust of a man with a mustache on a pedestal of uneven stone, located in a park among green trees.  The poet Rainis. It sucks when there are few national heroes, monuments to the same ones everywhere

A young man in glasses and a dark cap is riding a bicycle along a paved path. In the background, there is a large light yellow building with the Latvian flag above the entrance, surrounded by a lawn, flower beds, and trees. The punk and a school

A person in a cap is lying on their back with spread arms and legs on bright green grass next to a bicycle lying on its side. A body of water is visible nearby, with trees on the horizon. The punk is tired

A small pond in the foreground, reflecting a green slope with yellow dandelions. On the hill behind the pond, light-colored rural buildings can be seen surrounded by trees under a clear blue sky.

Top-down view of a narrow river with bubbling rapids flowing between overgrown banks. To the right, part of an old brick wall rises, and to the left, a gray stone structure is visible. Like this one

A turbulent stream of water overflows a dam of dry branches and sticks, forming white foam. Green shrub branches hang over the water from above, and a stone or concrete wall is visible on the right.  And this one

A lone, sprawling tree with young green foliage stands in a meadow at the bend of an asphalt road against a blue sky with light clouds. Such a mighty oak could be called a dižkoks

A winding stream with dark water and many stones on the bottom flows through a dense green forest. The banks are covered with bright young grass, and lush trees and bushes with rich spring foliage grow around.  It again

A wooden house, swings, and picnic tables are located on a green glade among tall trees. They did it better than in Daugavpils, surprisingly

A green lawn with a winding stone path and play elements: a wooden seesaw, a tractor frame, a small house, and animal figures. In the background are tall trees and outbuildings.

Kids probably have a good time growing up here. But I shy away from such forgotten places – I like civilization

A rural landscape with a bright green field in the foreground, beyond which village houses surrounded by trees can be seen. Under an overcast sky with weak sun, a dirt road, an electrical pole, and piles of firewood in the field are visible.  Cows and firewood
