We live as long as we fly

Photo report from Raleigh, N. Carolina (or should I say Roli?)

People were asking for photos from North Carolina here. I got the blog back up, so I can finally show them.

First, about how we went to a park near Duke University a month ago. None other than Frederick Brooks himself, the author of “The Mythical Man-Month”, teaches at Duke University.

A man and a woman are walking along a concrete sidewalk next to a paved road in an autumn park with colorful trees. One of the pedestrians has a backpack on their back.

Autumn landscape with a winding paved road surrounded by trees with bright yellow and orange foliage. A street lamp stands along the road, which is strewn with fallen leaves.

A blue sign with a wheelchair on a ramp icon, the text 'CHAPEL ACCESS', and an upward-pointing arrow, mounted on a gray stone wall of a building.
They think about disabled people everywhere. But actually I just liked the pattern in the fence.

A majestic Neo-Gothic gray stone university building with towers and a large archway. In front of the building is a green lawn with paved walkways, along which several people are walking.

Duke is an old and awesome university

A gray stone bench stands on a gravel path surrounded by fallen leaves, pine needles, and the thick green foliage of trees.

A stone bench with a metal memorial plaque in memory of Madge L. Hauser is set in the woods, the ground beneath it covered in dry pine needles and leaves.
Every random bench has been gifted by someone and inscribed.

An autumn park or garden with many trees and shrubs, their foliage turned shades of red, yellow, and green. People are strolling along a winding stone path roped off on the sides.

A peaceful autumn landscape: people are walking on a stone path along a dark pond with water lilies and aquatic plants, surrounded by lush greenery and trees with autumn foliage.

A lush garden with a wide multi-tiered stone staircase leading up, and a round flower bed with a bust in the center, surrounded by varied greenery and flowers.

There's a botanical garden near the uni, everything is very well-kept (by volunteers too, it seems) and beautiful.

A stone bench or low ledge made of multi-colored stones with a black memorial plaque reading 'IN MEMORY OF BEVERLY GOODMAN WELCH' embedded in the horizontal surface, adjoining a wall of similar stones and a section of a paved path.

Even the stones are inscribed and gifted

Looks like cabbage

Stone steps lead to an open gazebo overgrown with green foliage. Through the gazebo's opening, an autumn park with bright, multi-colored trees and silhouettes of people in the distance can be seen.

Round, flat stones resembling millstones form a curved path across a quiet pond in an autumn park. Tall trees, pines, and bright yellow foliage on the shore are reflected in the calm water.

In the foreground, tree branches with large green leaves, some already turning yellow. In the background, an autumn forest with bright orange and yellow foliage is visible.
This is probably an oak — there are tons of them in Carolina, of all different kinds

Looks like a banana tree, but it's not.

A calm pond in an autumn park, with tall green and orange trees growing on the opposite shore. A group of people is standing by the water, and their silhouettes along with the autumn foliage are reflected in the smooth surface of the pond. There's also a pond

A stone wall with an information plaque reading 'The Sarah P. Duke Gardens Memorial Gate' at the entrance to a shady park with autumn foliage. Next to the gate is a sign with the gardens' opening hours, and in the background, a path and a person sitting on a bench can be seen.
In the US, there are signs with various info everywhere, mostly of a prohibitive nature

Pay attention to the one on the right — it says the park closes at dusk. Usually, everything closes at sunset. Dusk is when it's already quite dark and soon you won't be able to see a thing, while sunset is just when the sun dips below the horizon.
