The German newspaper Der Spiegel writes that the Galileo project—the European alternative to GPS—has already exceeded every conceivable budget and been repeatedly delayed (by as much as 10 years overall). The companies entrusted with building it failed, and the European Commission had to take over its management. Moreover, in the long term, the project will be unprofitable in purely utilitarian economic terms (not to be confused with its political and indirect benefits) and will require subsidies. Overall, it will cost taxpayers €20 billion over the next 20 years.

So I agree that colossal blunders happen in the EU too. The only question is whether Galileo will ultimately prove operational, useful, and better than GPS. Naturally, the same applies to GLONASS and the Chinese system, about which I know absolutely nothing.
