Another album from Pitchfork’s top list. I liked it from the very first tracks.
The thick, dense, bass-heavy, dubby sound of ambient techno somehow blends quite well with the otherworldly vocals of his former piano teacher.
Despite its “experimental” sound, the album is quite catchy, with melodic phrases that stick with you. You can’t hum them, but they linger in your head afterward—I’ve checked. This is the kind of music I like: it sounds sophisticated, but it’s not so complex that you can’t get a visceral thrill from it. I simply don’t have enough pure intellect for all the works of contemporary composers.
