The population density of China is only one ten-thousandth of a person per square meter, or 135 people per km^2
Latvia's - about 4 per km^2.
And Tokyo's - one hundredth of a person per square meter, or about 13 thousand people per km^2.
I caught myself thinking that I can't imagine how someone could not know any English at all. I mean, I understand knowing it very poorly or just so-so, like me. But not knowing a single word—that's already beyond my comprehension.
I absolutely don't like songs in Latvian, except for tracks by the band Prata Vetra (Brainstorm)
I was sitting at lunch and figured out the reason: the Latvian language is melodic and good-natured, and doesn't fit at all with music styles that clash with this quality. I mean, metal in Latvian grates on the ears, rap is passable (sounds like French rap, probably)
You'd think schlagers (those songs with an accordion for people pushing 50) should sound wonderful. Maybe they do, but I really dislike this genre in and of itself, because it's a close relative of chanson.
Or maybe it's all much simpler — I've just heard too much Latvian in my life, and any long text in Latvian annoys me.
Every day I ride the bus to work for 8 minutes and hear an ad for my workplace right above my head. This could drive anyone crazy.
