On the one hand, we live in a wonderful age of progress. On the other - all technical devices are still monstrously primitive and inconvenient.
Tell me, why should I have to run around looking for a mini-usb cable to connect an mp3 player to the computer?
Couldn't they have put some kind of tiny built-in microusb connector in it, with a matching "female" port always available on the front of the computer?
Or better yet - make it wireless (which is already on the way). Though then charging it would be inconvenient.

Lately, I've gotten hooked on the sites www.digg.com and www.reddit.com
Their Russian clones are https://news2.ru/ and https://www.habrahabr.ru/
This is Web 2.0 news - users themselves add links to interesting stuff, and other users vote on whether they like it or not. Captivating. However, the problem is that right now crowds of not-very-smart people have rushed in there, who risk turning interesting and smart resources into garbage dumps like fishki.net, ziza.ru, ifun.ru. Digg met this fate first, due to the administration's policy and general pop appeal, expressed even in its design.
Digg, among other things, also suffers from "mafia clans". The thing is, Reddit has 2 buttons - vote up and vote down. This allows all the news the majority is interested in to break through. But on Digg there is no "down" button, instead there's a "bury" button, used when a news item seems inadequate or offensive to you. And so, "clans" (colluding or not) "drown" the topics they dislike.
For instance, atheist posts are very frequent on Reddit. It feels like all the people interested in science, technology, and interesting things a bit more complex than an ass with ears are atheists. (After all, officially there are only 3% atheists in America). And posts about atheism easily move up. But on Digg they are surely drowned out by believers.
I confess, I'm not without sin myself - as a rule, I immediately bury the endless drooling of Apple fans or news about fresh Apple software. In the end, there are barely any Apple users - so why should I have to read this?
And my problem is that reading these sites eats up a lot of time and health. Although you can't deny how captivating they are. Another problem is that links get duplicated - it turns out that it's better not to read several sites, but to read just one. Plus, the links overlap with the famous Russian collective blog www.dirty.ru, which I also read from time to time.
Cinema - Last Days On Earth
I watched the ABC documentary "Last Days On Earth". It's about the 7 most probable ends of human civilization. The film is beautiful, though populist.
I'll list them in order of probability (roughly based on the film), with my commentary.
1) Astrophysical catastrophe: the explosion of our or a neighboring sun, a rogue black hole.
Unlikely, but beautiful.
2) Asteroid.
Slightly more probable, but there's a high chance of altering its orbit and surviving. This was covered in the film.
3) Artificial intelligence.
It's hard to estimate the probability, but personally I think it's high. The thing is, the number of transistors is approaching the number of neurons in the human brain, and so the "transition of quantity into quality" according to Prigogine might kick in, and with minimal effort from actual humans at that. We have 20-50 years left, no more.
4) Supervolcano eruption.
There is a special type of volcano that can spew out a massive amount of lava and ash. This will clog up the atmosphere, create a pseudo-nuclear winter and poison the water to the level of acid over a huge territory. One such eruption could wipe out the population of almost all of America.
5) Nuclear war.
For now, making a nuclear weapon isn't all that easy, but the task is gradually getting simpler. On one hand, the geopolitical atmosphere isn't great right now, on the other — totally sick regimes, even if they could do damage, would only hurt their neighbors. The only plausible scenario for a global catastrophe is a provocation staged by terrorists and the stupidity of one of the nuclear powers that takes the bait. Russia is in a bad spot here: security is poor, stuff can be blown up or stolen.
6) Bacteriological threat.
Everyone's heard of bird flu. Well — there are lots of diseases like that. The threat is also growing thanks to the widespread use of antibiotics and the active fight against diseases. The better we fight, the harder they hit back.
There have been many pandemics, and bacteria, and especially viruses, are the most perfect creatures on earth, with incredible abilities to adapt.
If you consider that the equipment to modify and enhance them is widely available, the threat multiplies manifold — soon a few tens of millions of dollars will be enough to get a deadly strain of some known disease. Creating an antidote takes several months — by that time everyone will already be dead.
7) Global warming.
The film presented an absolutely one-sided point of view. Global warming is a fact, and it's caused by humans. That's what all climatologists think, except for a few bought by TNCs.
If we don't do anything, most of the inhabited territory will soon be under water, terrifying tsunamis and tornadoes will begin, and we will all face a slow and unpleasant fucking end.
Looks plausible, good thing at least it won't be right now.
Every episode was commented on by scientists — specialists in their field. And they asked the most famous scientist on the planet to shed light on the whole thing — the astrophysicist Stephen Hawking (Hawking)
Hawking is a cult figure in the world of techno-freaks. He is a paralytic, confined to a wheelchair, and only able to blink. Under his directions, a system was created that allowed him not only to communicate with the outside world, but also to do scientific work. He wrote the books "A Brief History of Time" and "A Briefer History of Time", which became bestsellers.
His commentary in the film looked unrealistically cool and futuristic: a motionless man of the "mad scientist" type, and a computer-synthesized voice, the meaning of whose words is repeated on the screen with subtitles.
And the commentary was very short, extremely clear, and capturing the essence.
The leitmotif of the film is this: if we can't rein ourselves in, we'll go extinct. In the best case scenario, almost everyone, if not everyone.
And the practical advice is this: conserve electricity and the environment. Americans just can't help moralizing :-)
It's a pity the film didn't present one more scenario — witty, but hard for a layman to grasp. They could have told it, at least as part of the artificial intelligence episode.

I just did to my PC what in the USSR used to be called a "Skillful Hands" club, and what is now called modding.
The gist of it was simple: I replaced the 8cm exhaust fan on the back panel with a 12cm one. To do this, I first had to slightly mangle the case with wire cutters, then bend the sheet metal with pliers, and rub the fan's plastic with a needle file so it would fit. At this point, I rejoiced at the fact that our house has every conceivable tool.
Next, I replaced the AMD stock CPU fan, which I had set up as an intake, with that very 8cm fan from the back panel. Along the way, it turned out that the AMD fan wasn't working for some reason. Apparently, serving below its rank didn't do it any good. The proud special forces fan, whose duty was to guard the central processor, couldn't bear the appointment to the pathetic position of the fourth-ranking blower in the case. The installation of the 8cm old-timer, however, went almost without a hitch.
Then a fresh thought crossed my mind, one that for some reason hadn't visited me before. The thing is, all my fans run at a reduced speed. One is connected through a special device - an adjustable rheobus. The CPU fan is controlled by the motherboard - at high temperatures, the revolutions per second increase. But there is no good solution for the third fan, so it was connected to the red and yellow wire from the power supply, which gives 7 volts instead of the usual 12. It's an inflexible solution, but it worked.
So, the thought was as simple as five kopecks, and yet not bad at all. Why not connect the exhaust fan, the 12cm one, in parallel with the CPU fan to the motherboard? I hardly play games, so its RPM will almost always be reduced, just like the CPU's. But if it gets hot - no problem, the airflow will immediately go full blast.
And so I did. There's not that much left - to drill more air holes where the 12cm fan is now, because this spot isn't meant for it, and so half of its effort is currently going to waste.
If you want to ask why I needed all this, the answer is: just out of curiosity.
And, as it turned out, even a bit useful - after all, I discovered that the hard drives weren't getting any airflow due to the death of the AMD cooler. And I have 4 hard drives, and they heat up like irons, which without cooling means a short life and a painful death.
The whole process took me about two hours, with breaks for pickles.
